I knew Hudson well. He struggled for many years with manic depression/ bi-polar disorder. He tried bravely to beat this brutal illness, and sometimes thought that he should be able to conquer it on his own, without medication or assistance from anyone else. I am sorry that he wasn't able to find the help he needed to survive. He was a good man and a kind, talented, and idealistic soul.

Hudson Bradford still lives as a contact in my hotmail address book. His death is marked by an email that still sits undeleted at the end of my inbox.

I also worked with Hudson in Kosovo. He came to Kosovo bright and eager to make a difference. He was smart, passionate and strong desire to make the world a better place. However, like the rest of us, he was not prepared for the lessons of Kosovo. It was hard to live amongst people suffering, being cold, and living amongst hate that daily caused people to cower in fear, houses to be burened and death. The hate of Kosovo was a hard reality that sucked the life out of a lot of good people.

My memory of Hudson is of him practicing his guitar on the doorstep of the guest house. The sun shining on him with the mountains in the back. I don't know the circumstances of him taking is his life. The path to suicide is degrading. I am saddened to think of Hudson living through that painful process.

Like the Wade, I found out late and by email. I cried. I cried for the timeI knew him. I cried because I didn't know him better. He led an amazing life before Kosovo that I knew nothing about. I cried because he was yet another victim of Kosovo. The war keeps killing. I bet he would be happy with Kosovo's independence.

I always meant to send a belated condolence card to his parents. I wouldn't know what to say. They raised a wonderful man who died to early. It sounds a bit hollow.

I think Christians get so caught up with social justice and love that they forget to follow Christ love does require repentance.

This may be a little like answering the question, "which one of your children do you love the most?" Scripture says we are created "Imago Dei" - in His image. We should be reflections of Him. We are broken people because of sin and the Fall and can not perfectly (or close to it) fulfill our mission. But He loves and blesses our imperfect obedience as he slowly fixes or sanctifies us to full restoration.

Oh Carole... I thought you might completely ignore my first couple sentences. I think the Strip club ministry is great.

I'm just musing. I believe that the ONLY thing more important for us to understand about God than Love is His Holiness as I posted.

My dilemna is learning how to communicate and display his other attributes as well as His love. I don't think you are guilty of this, but there are many believers and cult movements that would suggest that God is ONLY Love. It's always easier to just love than to tell a person lovingly that they should repent to avoid the wrath of God, but at some point people must be told this and they may not consider that a very loving fact.

His kindness is one thing that "leads us toward repentance." It's not however the only thing. The scripture also doesn't say that our kindness will lead people to repentance. To repent, we first have to know what Repentance is. We can't know what repentance is if we aren't aware of sin and its consequences.

Of course, I do believe that telling a sinner to repent is the most loving thing that a person can do as long as it isn't done in a self-righteous manner. It must be done.

Another thought..remember when I moved back from Florida in 1989, after I backslid? Your family took me in, showed me love, not judgement, just a soft place to fall, feel the love of Jesus in a family that didn't have to care about me but did. I never felt anything but His love and THAT is how Jesus broke through all the legalistic bull crap and sin in my heart. I have never felt more loved by family then I did then, and I wasn't even your real family. Ya'll loved me back into the fold. Ya'll were Jesus to me when I couldn't see Him in everything else. LOVE is powerful cuz' it is what GOD feels for us.

I think scripture is clear.."Love the lord your God with all your heart soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself" they go together but we can't love our neighbor as ourselves without loving Him first and letting Him love through us.

You know where I stand on this issue. I believe when you say "only" your speaking in narrow terms about those of us who believe love is "first", not "only". Scripture says "your kindness leads me to repentance..you who are without sin, throw the first stone..etc.." the grace of God is given to us because He loves us. There is nothing but the love of God that really changes hearts. Walking that out in every area of life is a life long work but I have no doubt that the first act of a christian to a non christian should be love.

As far as the strip clubs are concerned. The truth is, they expect Christians to come with judgement. They live in hell, going there would just be phase two to them in their minds. The only thing that breaks the hard heart is the love of Jesus. Discipline, justice, holiness come after they have started walking in the light, following Jesus. The foundation is Love.

I agree Jimmy. We could benefit greatly from having a more global mindset. I've thoroughly enjoyed my forees outside of the country. They are eye-opening to say the least.

The prevalent mentality among american Christians that America is somehow the international capital for Christianity and the center of God's economy crawls under my skin.

I agree that we should always be gracious, but it's also OK to passionately disagree as long as it is done in a gracious manner. Jesus was pretty rough on people from time to time. Paul was downright brutal... The truth can be offensive no matter how it is presented. We have to speak the truth in love and let the chips fall where they may. We're not responsible for how people may respond to the truth especially when it is spoken in a loving manner.

I wrote a couple post election post on my blog and all hell broke lose cuz' I talked about extending grace to Obama and other Christians that supported him. Like I said, I voted for McCain but I didn't feel fear or anger when Obama won. I the same concerns about the poor and the unborn, but I think the church has to step up and be the church in word and in deed for such a time as this.

I'm of the opinion that one of the things plaguing many Christians in this country is that they consider themselves Americans first, Christians second. This nation as an entity is not protected by God.

I hope one day to spend an extended amount of time with my family outside the US. I think all American Christians should. It gives you a world perspective on the Great Commission instead of what we have in America: Our own brand of Christian "entitlement" where we think we have a right to worship openly and freely, to bear arms, to eat out at a nice restaurant after church on Sunday, etc.

Those are all things that are tenuous at best in most countries and may one day again be in the one we currently call home.

If my son chooses a homosexual lifestyle, it would sadden me, but I cannot disown my son. He's my son, will always be my son, and will always be loved as much as he allows me to love him. I don't fear, dislike, or wish any ill will toward homosexuals. I have been friends with homosexuals and have members of my extended family that are gay.

Sam, if you don't believe there is a homosexual agenda to promote the acceptance of homosexuality, then your head is buried very deeply in the sand.
